Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
